Celestino Piatti (Switzerland, 1922)

Celestino Piatti is a Swiss graphic designer and painter. Starting from 1937 he studied at the college of arts and crafts in Zurich and afterwards completed an apprenticeship as a graphic designer. Since 1948 he is active as an independent graphic designer. He obtained his first international successes with poster designs.

Piatti became particularly famous for his work for Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag (dtv) whose paperbacks were designed by him almost exclusively since the establishment of the publishing house in 1960 until the 1990ies. Beside the covers he was responsible for typografie, logos, letterheads, announcements and posters, creating a uniform corporate identity. The salient, uniformly white dtv volumes with Piatti's characteristic illustrations are considered a milestone of elegant and high-quality book-art in the world of paperbacks.

Altogether Piatti created over 6300 book covers, picture books and book illustrations. A motive which leads through his entire work is the owl, which wakes various associations as bringer of fortune or misfortune or as a symbol of wisdom. 1992 Piatti notes in one of his drawings: One can draw an owl a thousand times, its secret you'll never reach.
