Ali Mitgutsch (Germany, 1935)
Ali Mitgutsch, born in Munich in 1935, went on to become a lithographer and later studied at the Academy for Graphic Arts in Munich. After his studies he packed his backpack and strolled throughout the world with a friend. For 17 years Ali travelled for a few months each year through different countries and earned his money by selling small drawings or making mural paintings.
On these journeys Ali invented stories and images for his books. His famous picture books remind of anthills. On a small surface many small things happen. Therefore people started to call these books Wimmelbilderbücher or teeming-picture-books. They have different topics and are called Come to the Water, All around my City or In the Country among many others. If children cannot read yet, they only need to open up these books and look at the pictures and dive in. Children and parents can invent stories themseves as they go.
